Recently opened in Kuala Lumpur, Mama San is the latest iteration of the restaurant concept created by celebrated Bali-based chef Will Meyrick ( see also Mama San Hong Kong and Mama San Bali). Acclaimed for their authentic renditions of regional street food, Mama San offers diners a unique culinary experience with dishes created from street food recipes representing the diversity of south-east Asian cultures. While traditional recipes and cooking techniques are respected, the chefs at Mama San also introduce a contemporary culinary aesthetic with premium fresh ingredients and attractive presentation. Established in collaboration with well-known luxury lifestyle and retail group Melium, the restaurant occupies a prime corner location on the ground level of the prestigious Suria KLCC mall. With both indoor and outdoor sections and an imposing bar, Mama San is a popular destination for all-day dining, evening cocktails, and relaxed weekend gatherings.

Decor   Replicating the design theme of the Bali flagship restaurant,  the decor of the KL offshoot features a chic blend of East and West influences reminiscent of 1920′s Shanghai. Dark timbers and retro furnishings predominate, while the hallmark “Mama San” mural prominent across the back wall, together with leather Chesterfield sofas, further evoke the design sensibilities of the Bali restaurant. Guests can choose between seating within the main interior dining room, or at the more casual outdoor settings of the terrace section that overlooks the KLCC parklands.

Cuisine  Popularly known as the “Street Food Chef” – Meyrick has published a book on his many peripatetic forays into the culinary hinterlands of the countries of South East Asia – collecting recipes, discovering indigenous ingredients, and tasting the local street-side cooking. At Mama San, the expansive a la carte menu reflects the diversity of authentic regional dishes, cooked with passion by experienced local chefs. Notable dishes that exemplify the Mama San culinary concept include Mama San fish curry with okra tomato tamarind & fish curry powder; Slowly braised “Beef rendang” simmered in Indonesian spices and coconut milk; and Salmon salad with green mango lemongrass lime leaf Thai basil & sweet fish sauce.

Cocktails   Serving thirst-quenching cocktails all day, the bar at Mama San entices a chic clientele for sunset and after-dinner drinks. Bartenders specialise in mixing up flavourful versions of classic cocktails, using fresh local ingredients to contribute an Asian taste profile. A speciality at all Mama San bars – the six varieties of Mojito include favourites like the Mango Pomegranate Mojito; and Coconut Mojito. Other top picks from the drinks list include the Pineapple Kaffir Lime Margarita, and Moscow Mule.

Open daily from early morning, the Mama San kitchen serves the extensive a la carte menu all-day. Enjoying considerable popularity, table reservations are recommended for the peak lunch and dinner service times. Menu updates and special events are featured on the Mama San Facebook Page.
