Jazz Age glamour and avant-garde cocktails come together harmoniously at Singapore’s elegant cocktail salon – The Powder Room. Occupying the mezzanine level of the acclaimed The Black Swan restaurant in the heart of the financial district, the meticulously realised Art Deco-inspired interior nestles attractively within the historic 1930’s bank building. Relaunched with a redefined identity, the mezzanine level bar and lounge recreates the glamorous nightlife experiences of a past era, taking inspiration from the unrestrained indulgences of the Roaring Twenties when jazz music and speakeasy bars flourished. Classic cocktails are given a contemporary makeover with modern mixology techniques and theatrical bartending, while jazz tracks from legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong suffuse the room with the spirit of swing. Every Tuesday the house band elevates the mood with live jazz sessions – while guest performers are featured monthly. The Powder Room is the latest concept realised by the Lo & Behold Group, joining an impressive portfolio of innovative venues.

Design  Entered through the ground level restaurant, a staircase at the back of the room leads to the intimately proportioned mezzanine space. Art Deco features retained from the original building include geometric patterned decorative screens, while the timber-panelled walls and restrained luxury of leather banquettes and marble tables exude a retro-chic aesthetic. The handsome mirror-backed bar showcases vintage crystal glassware and cocktail paraphernalia, its overhead Art Deco-inspired pendant lights a further reference to the period.

Cocktails   Designed by Lo & Behold group bar mentor Julian ‘The Don” Serna (previously with internationally awarded Sydney bar Eau de Vie ) the new cocktail program showcases reinterpreted classic libations – refreshed with imaginative twists. Progressive mixology techniques like infusions, sous vide and smoking, combine with skilled bartending to create a polished cocktail experience. Cocktails are appropriately served in vintage crystal-cut glassware and an eclectic assemblage of retro cocktail vessels. Categorised by flavour and strength profile, the concise list of signature cocktails is supplemented by an expansive selection of premium spirits, single malt whiskies, champagnes and wines.

The Powder Room opens from 5 pm until late Tuesday to Saturday evenings. Live musicians play a repertoire of classic jazz every Tuesday while details on monthly guest performers and special events are available on the Facebook Page. Table bookings are recommended.
