Whisky and cocktail aficionados in Hong Kong can immerse themselves in an authentic Japanese-style whisky bar experience at Mizunara: The Library – located in the upcoming eastern end of Wanchai. A little hard to find – Mizunara occupies a compact space on the 4th floor of an unremarkable commercial building – guests are rewarded with a bar that specialises in premium and rare whiskies primarily from Japan and Scotland, complemented with a concise list of polished signature, or bespoke cocktails. Heading up the bar team, award winning bartender Masahiko Endo’s twenty-plus years of bar experience, knowledge and meticulous bartending technique ensures consistently high standards of service and exceptional libations. A true whisky haven, Mizunara offers a remarkable list of 700+ labels, including bottlings from artisan Japanese distilleries, and selections of aged whiskies from top-tier and lesser known producers.

Design   Modelled closely on a sophisticated Tokyo bar aesthetic, the interior of Mizunara features warm timbers, plush leather seating, and a substantial solid wood bar. Internal walls opposite the bar are lined with shelves that showcase the “library” of whisky bottles, while full height glass windows overlook the outdoor terrace space that has been transformed into a tranquil Japanese garden – replete with furniture crafted from mizunara (Japanese oak wood) whisky barrels.

Whisky & Cocktails   Whiskies and cocktails are served in exquisite Japanese glassware, with hallmark hand-chiselled ice spheres added as the perfect accompaniment to the fine whisky serves. While foremost a whisky bar, head bartender Endo-san has been recognised for his refined cocktails – winning the 2009 Champion Cocktail at the Professional Bartender Association awards for his signature Kohbai cocktail. His cocktail list highlights premium Japanese spirits blended with top quality ingredients to create distinctly Japanese flavour profiles, well-balanced and with delicate complexity.

Like its Tokyo peers, Mizunara stays open late until 3am. For early evening drinks, a must-try is the special offer Omakase tasting course. Popular among a discerning clientele of locals and in-the-know visitors, reservations are recommended. Mizunara has a minimum spend of HK$400 / person after 9pm.
