A short walk down one of the innumerable alleys in Saigon’s District 1 nightlife precinct reveals the newly opened Knick Knack restaurant/cocktail bar and rooftop music destination. Unobtrusively set within a restored multi-level shophouse, Knick Knack showcases an inventive interpretation of Modern Spanish tapas that can be paired either with well-priced wines or a selection of progressive and classic cocktails served at the ground-floor bar. On the intimate rooftop space, the focus is on laid-back socialising with a background of gritty inner city views and DJ-selected tunes. Weekend nights feature Live Music performances from local musicians.
With a generous frontage created by opening up three adjoining shophouses, Knick Knack enjoys a comfortable spaciousness across it’s three levels – ground floor bar, first-floor dining room with open-air terrace, and the chic rooftop space good for either alfresco dining or casual drinks. A vibrant decor mixes up a retro-glam with contemporary rustic elements that reference the inner-city heritage.
Madrid-native chef Alex Cuchillo takes classic tapas dishes and local Asian street food influences and reinterprets them into an intriguing menu of progressive dishes that can both surprise and delight with the imaginative flavor combinations. Exemplifying the modern tapas are dishes such as Thai-style Meatballs – generous portions of wagyu beef served with a spicy red curry; and the flavourful Shitake Ravioli – with wonton ravioli stuffed with shitake – topped with spinach bechamel sauce and crispy leeks.
And at the entrance level bar, the progressive theme is also to the forefront with mixology that reimagines classic drinks like the G&T with culinary techniques to fashion refreshing cocktails like the signature Sous Vide Mango Gin & Tonic – created with premium gin infused sous vide-style with local mangos topped with imported tonic water.
