Speakeasy-themed bar co-founded by veteran Hong Kong mixologist John Nugent
March 16th, 2020
Notable among recent new bar openings in Hong Hong, The Diplomat promises to become a destination in Central for top-notch classic cocktails and convivial hospitality. Co-founded by Seattle mixologist John Nugent (ex-Lily & Bloom) the bar has an appealing balance of a speakeasy disposition melded with the relaxed vibe of an intimate gastro-pub. Located within the prestigious new lifestyle tower H Code in the heart of Central district – home to leading global art galleries, creative businesses and a carefully curated assemblage of restaurants and bars.
The Diplomat occupies a compact space on the lower ground floor of H Code with seating for 18 guests – either at the bar or the brown leather banquettes within the dining space. A curved, tinted glass facade connects the interior with the outside mall space. In harmony with the artistic setting, eclectic artwork is featured, together with luxurious decor elements such as custom brass finishes and motif ceiling tiles.
Drinks are inspired by the experiences of famous ambassadors, state leaders, and public figures – while the bar program focuses on small-batch spirits and wines – with cocktails referencing classic cocktails. Signature cocktails such as the Diplo Daiquiri and Champagne Julep exemplify the well-executed mixology created under head bartender John Nugent.
The Diplomat also serves a menu of snacks and brasserie-style hot dishes – referencing a cosmopolitan array of cuisines and familiar flavors. Standouts include Black Truffle Mac & Cheese; Pommes Frites with Espelette Pepper; and Suckling Pig Cubano.
The Diplomat opens Monday to Saturday from 6:00 pm.
