Update: 2013- Jackrabbit has closed

The December 2010 opening of JACKRABBIT introduced a new level of sophisticated yet relaxed dining, and lounge bar experience, to the discerning Jakarta nightlife scene.  The restaurateurs of Urban Concept ( Cork & Screw, Loewy, Urban Kitchen, Blue Note, and Tokio Kitchen) have created a stunning space, with a sleek, luxurious interior design, inspired by the elegance of 1930’s New York,  featuring high-ceilings, unfinished concrete surfaces, dark timber furnishings, and highlighted by a spectacular “floating” mezzanine private dining room- suspended by steel casts from the ceiling above the dining area.

The main ground level space at JACKRABBIT is arranged into several distinct areas- from the front entrance an impressive main bar extends down the length of one wall, and opposite are some lounge seating and tables. Then moving further into the expansive space the main dining area occupies the entire rear section- the soaring high floor-to-ceiling glass windows providing an atmosphere of spaciousness. At the rear of the building – adjacent the open kitchen- is a covered outdoor terrace area- with a decorative pool and numerous planter boxes to soothe the senses.

The mezzanine private dining room is reached via a staircase at the end of the bar area, and the suspended room itself has seating at two tables for 20 diners. A feature of the design of the room is the use of intricately carved, full height, timber screens- in the tradition of Indonesian craftsmanship.

The 14 metre long main bar commands a prominent presence within the overall space- the full height backbar space is partly shelved, with a custom made library ladder that slides along a timber rail. The bar is well stocked with all the premium spirits required for an extensive cocktail offering, and mounds of fresh fruit are on hand to be utilised as ingredients in the drinks.

The darkly sophisticated atmosphere is enhanced by the use of timber shutters on the full height glass wall of windows down one side of the interior, candle lights on the dining tables, and soft lighting effects from suspended lamps.

The menu created by executive chef Juna Rorimpandey, with a solid background in both French and Japanese culinary skills, is inspired from contemporary American cuisine- with an emphasis on fresh-from-the-farm ingredients. The menu includes a large selection of small plates, a range of entrees including grilled fresh seafoods and various cuts from the butcher, plus late-night comfort food, desserts and a Sunday brunch menu.

The eclectic drink list at JACKRABBIT has been created by resident Bar Chef / Mixologist Carson Quinn who brings to the Jakarta bar scene  his wide experience from elite establishments in both USA and UK. Unique cocktails are being continually created – using both classic formulas and also combinations of locally available fruits and other fresh ingredients. The international wine selection includes both bottles and wine by the glass. Draught and bottled beers, and a full range of premium spirits are available.

The overall impression that JACKRABBIT creates, both in terms of design originality and execution, and also the dining and lounge experience, is one of a sophisticated, world class establishment, and it sets an impressive  new benchmark against which all new and existing Jakarta restaurants and bars will be measured.
