BRIX is a perennially popular nightclub located in a large basement space at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. Over the years, BRIX has become renowned for the high quality – high energy live music performed by a regular roster of international bands. Playing  a broad spectrum of music genres- jazz funk, R & B, hip hop, soul and disco- the bands never fail to fill the dance floor with enthusiastic party-goers. In addition to the attraction of live music, the design of  BRIX utilises the cavernous space to weave together three distinct entertainment concepts- the Wine Bar, the Whisky Bar and the Music Bar. This provides guests with the option of moving freely between quieter, more intimate zones, or to join the boisterous crowds that fill the Music Bar. The clientele at BRIX is generally a mix of hotel guests and business travellers, local expats, and trendy local revelers. A strict dress code is maintained.

The MUSIC BAR

BRIX was launched in 1998- replacing the previous nightclub at the Grand Hyatt Singapore- Brannigans- that had previously occupied the space. The basement was totally re-worked under the direction of renowned Japanese design firm Super Potato ( who have since worked extensively with other Hyatt properties in Asia). Super Potato were also the designers for other restaurants and bars within the Grand Hyatt Singapore- initially BRIX and mezza9 in 1998, StraitsKitchen in 2004, and most recently 10 SCOTTS in 2011. The design philosophy is clearly evident in all these outlets- the extensive use of natural and salvaged building materials- wood, stone, glass and metal- combining them in unexpected ways to create exciting and unusual spaces. The concepts draw on traditional Japanese  minimalism, but with a contemporary and original interpretation.

For the layout of BRIX , named after the predominant building material used in the construction, the designers have created three zones within the overall space. The nightclub is accessed by an external staircase adjoining the main hotel entrance. A solid, rough  metal door  at the entrance opens into the dimly lighted reception area. Open stacked brick walls separate out the different spaces- the more intimate Wine Bar and Whisky Bar occupy a corner section of the overall space- and the Music Bar the balance. The brickwork throughout BRIX has been employed in a variety of ways, creating differing patterns, textures and decorative effects. Overhead, the ceilings are open, exposing the metal ductwork and light fittings. Spotlights highlight the texture and patterns of the brickwork, and create a toned down warmth to the atmosphere. Floors are dark stone tiles in the Wine Bar and Whisky Bar, and timber elsewhere.

The WINE BAR

The Wine Bar opens directly off the reception and presents a number of semi-private seating arrangements, plus a curving bar counter- topped with a solid slab of polished timber, with the edges remaining in an uneven, natural state. At the far end of the the bar, the glass encased wine cellar acts as the partition between the Wine Bar and the Whisky Bar behind. The Wine Bar offers an extensive wine list of fine wines and champagnes from the major global wine districts.

Adjacent to the Wine Bar, the Whisky Bar also features a long, solid timber bar counter, and seating at high bench tables with leather upholstered stools. In one corner, a glassed enclosure houses the Cigar Salon. The Whisky Bar is specialising in serving a range of single malts, cognacs and liquers.

The MUSIC BAR – towards stage and alcoves

The main Music Bar – with the bar itself is the prominent feature of the room- a long rectangular bar with solid timber bar counters wrapped around all sides. High leather bar seats line both sides of the bar- providing immediate access to the energy of the room. At the far end of the bar are the dance floor, and stage for the bands performing their music. Tables are arranged in clusters around the main floor area, and along one wall, brick alcoves provide some more intimate spaces.
