Established in mid-2014 within the heritage enclave of Ann Siang Hill on the fringe of Singapore’s CBD, Nutmeg & Clove has taken a historical perspective with its cocktail offerings. Embracing the progression from colonial outpost to modern metropolis, Nutmeg & Clove incorporates familiar elements of the diverse cultural and culinary heritage to create a list of avant-garde cocktails featuring classics reinterpreted with a Singaporean inflection. Served within a characterful refurbished shophouse space once occupied by a Cantonese clan association, Nutmeg & Clove strikes a deft balance between historical references and modern cocktail culture sensibilities. Friendly yet knowledgeable bartenders engender a relaxed atmosphere, making Nutmeg & Clove a popular destination for after-work drinks or late night libations.

Design  Occupying a compact ground floor space within a heritage shophouse building, Nutmeg & Clove takes its name from a nutmeg and clove plantation that used to stand on Ann Siang Hill in the early colonial period. Beyond the nondescript period facade, the interior retains authentic design elements such dark timber panelling and cabinetry that evoke a traditional Chinese medicinal hall, while the concrete and tiled floor and open void light-well are typical of period shophouse design. Contemporary decor elements such as a long black leather banquette, and a clean, uncluttered layout provide a comfortable setting for casual enjoyable evenings. Outdoor tables on the five-foot walkway are a good option for people watching over the bustling street scene.

Cocktails   A concise list of signature cocktails feature well-informed combinations of premium spirits and local spices to create some flavour-packed and intriguing drinks. Categorised under two groupings – “Thought Provokers” highlight reinterpreted classics like the Barrel Aged Singapore Sling, and the Good Ole Fashion Revolution. While under the “Merry Tipples” category – flavour-forward creations offer refreshing choices typified by the First Princess of Asia – with bourbon, mango & saffron, spiced orange, and green tea; and Nutmeg & Clove No.2 – vodka, nutmeg & clove, hawthorn, and lychee. A menu of Bar Bites offer tasty accompaniments such as Crispy Chicken with Gin Mustard Dip, and Spicy Otah and Mantou served with lemon mayo.

Nutmeg & Clove opens Monday to Saturday from 5 pm. Founded by a highly respected team with local and international bar industry backgrounds, Nutmeg & Clove regularly hosts guest stints behind the bar by leading international bartenders. Check the Nutmeg & Clove Facebook Page for details on upcoming events. Uncommon for Singapore, the bill at Nutmeg & Clove does not include a service charge.
