Our curated guide to KL’s outstanding cocktail bars in 2026
June 23rd, 2026
Kuala Lumpur’s cocktail scene has emerged as one of the most quietly impressive in Southeast Asia. Behind unassuming shophouse doors, through barbershop entrances, and down backstreets that give no hint of what lies within, a generation of Malaysian bartenders has built something of genuine world-class distinction. The proof is in the rankings: four KL bars sit on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025 list, with Penrose reaching the global Top 10 — extraordinary for a city that was barely on the international cocktail map a decade ago.
What defines the best of KL’s bars is a pride in place that expresses itself through ingredient and narrative alike. Malaysian produce — Trigona stingless bee honey, pandan, torch ginger, lychee, asam boi — appears throughout these menus not as gimmick but as genuine commitment to locality. The result is a cocktail scene that is unmistakably rooted in its city, its culture, and its abundant natural pantry.
This is our curated selection of twelve stand-out cocktail bars in Kuala Lumpur.
Penrose
PRECISION COCKTAIL BAR — ASIA’S 50 BEST

Improbably set behind a discreet door on Jalan Petaling in Chinatown, past the fruit stalls and the tourist bustle — Penrose has quietly become the finest cocktail bar in Malaysia and one of the most acclaimed in Asia. Ranked No. 10 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025, Jon Lee’s intimate bar operates on a philosophy of functionalism and restraint: bar-counter seating only, no decorative bottle displays, no theatrical excess. What greets guests is a sleek, spare interior that focusses attention on the cocktails.
Penrose constructs its cocktails around five pillars — alcohol, flavour, taste, body, and dilution — a framework that yields drinks of extraordinary balance and precision. The Penrose Gibson, a crisp martini sharpened with sake vinegar and pickled leek, captures the house philosophy perfectly. While the Makopa Martini, built on gin and vermouth with june plum and lava salt, is equally revelatory. Reservations are strongly advised; seats are few and demand is considerable.

Bar Trigona
SUSTAINABLE FARM-TO-BAR COCKTAIL LOUNGE — FOUR SEASONS KL

Named after the indigenous Malaysian stingless bee whose rare honey anchors the cocktail programme, Bar Trigona occupies a spectacular position on the sixth floor of the Four Seasons Hotel — floor-to-ceiling glass framing a close-up view of the Petronas Twin Towers on one side, and the glittering mosaic of the bar interior on the other. It is one of the most beautiful bar interiors in Southeast Asia, and the drinks match the setting.
The cocktail menu is structured around four flavour profiles — Fruit; Leaf & Flower; Stem & Seed; and Root — all built on Malaysian ingredients sourced from a community of local farmers and foragers the bar has cultivated over years. The Trigona Honey Flight, a trio of reimagined classics using the bar’s prized stingless bee honey, is essential ordering.

Three X Co
PROHIBITION-ERA INSPIRED SPEAKEASY — BANGSAR

Discovering Three X Co for the first time requires a degree of commitment that the bar rewards handsomely. Hidden behind a pop-up barbershop on the third floor of Bangsar Shopping Centre, the entrance is deliberately theatrical — and the reveal, when you push through the barber curtain and step into the dimly lit room beyond, does not disappoint. Dark leather furniture, gold accents, vintage glassware, and the unhurried mood of a 1920s private members’ club make this one of KL’s most evocative drinking environments.
Founded by a trio of award-winning bartenders, Three X Co carries a well-curated selection of top-shelf gins and whiskies, from which the team craft a cocktail menu that foregrounds local and Southeast Asian flavour profiles with quiet confidence. The bourbon-based Mr Wong’s Choice — paired with chrysanthemum, house-made longan liqueur, and Pei Pa Kao — is a showcase of the bar’s kitchen-meets-bar approach. The Balik Pulau, a gin cocktail with Penang white nutmeg and clarified milk, rewards the adventurous drinker. Ranked No. 15 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025.

PS150
CHINATOWN HERITAGE COCKTAIL BAR

Hidden behind a vintage toy shop display in a pre-war Chinatown shophouse — PS150 is one of KL’s most rewarding bar discoveries. Once inside, the space unfolds into three distinct areas: the intimate Opium Den, draped in velvet and mood lighting; the open-air Courtyard, a refreshing release under the Kuala Lumpur sky; and the Main Bar, where bartenders work with the confidence of a team that has been refining its craft for years.
The cocktail menu at PS150 is conceived as a map — plotting some twenty signature creations along axes of light-to-strong and comforting-to-adventurous — and draws heavily on Asian flavours and ingredients: pandan, lychee, asam boi, and chilli appear throughout. Cocktails are priced at approachable levels, making PS150 one of KL’s most popular craft cocktail destinations. A true institution, beloved by locals and first-time visitors alike.

Reka:Bar
INNOVATIVE LAB EQUIPPED COCKTAIL BAR — BUKIT DAMANSARA

Reka:Bar arrives with the quiet confidence of a bar that knows exactly what it is: part lounge, part laboratory, entirely serious about the alchemy of flavour. Tucked above a shophouse in the upscale Bukit Damansara district, the bar’s interior exudes a sleek, contemporary vibe, complementing the prominent array of lab equipment that signals the team’s intentions. Drinks here are clarified, fermented, and distilled in-house; the bar’s fully equipped flavour lab is not decorative but operational.
The cocktail menu is arranged around themed concepts — the ‘Domino Effect’ menu links each drink to the next through a shared ingredient — and seasonal narratives that celebrate Malaysia’s cultural diversity. The Naughty Congee, inspired by Chinese porridge with warmth, umami, and surprising originality, has become something of a calling card. Coley
BANGSAR COCKTAIL INSTITUTION — PIONEER OF THE MODERN KL BAR SCENE

Some bars define a scene; Coley helped create one. When CK Kho opened his craft cocktail bar on Jalan Abdullah in Bangsar in 2014 — using only craft spirits at a time when the concept was barely understood in Malaysia — he was planting a flag. Named after Ada Coleman, the legendary head bartender of The Savoy in London during the early twentieth century and inventor of the Hanky Panky, Coley reflects its namesake’s values: precision, warmth, and an absolute refusal to be pretentious about good drinks.
The interior, designed by local designer Karen Mok to evoke an underground bar that remains open and inviting, is intimate and elegantly considered. The cocktail list spans thoughtfully executed classics and Malaysian-inflected originals — the Gin & Coconut, a tropical riff using fresh coconut water, is one of KL’s best-loved signature drinks. Head bartender Alvin ‘Loco’ holds the bar steady with irreverence and skill. Ranked No. 92 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025; a fixture on the list since 2018.

JungleBird
TROPICAL RUM BAR — BUKIT DAMANSARA

Named after the classic 1970s tiki cocktail that has become one of bartending’s most beloved templates, JungleBird wears its tropical character with a relaxed ease. The interior features mostly locally made rattan furniture, lush tropical prints, warm lighting – all channeling a Caribbean ambience overlaid with a distinctly Malaysian ease. It is an energising and welcoming space, the kind of bar that makes an evening feel unhurried from the first sip.
The bar’s specialty is rum with over one hundred labels ranging from small-batch producers from Haiti to the aromatic high-ester Jamaican expressions line the back bar, rotated constantly to introduce new finds. The Cendol Colada — a brilliantly local riff on the pina colada incorporating the dessert’s flavours — is a signature worth the visit alone. JungleBird has appeared on Asia’s 50 Best Bars since 2018, and remains one of KL’s most joyful and generously spirited destinations.

Pahit
SPECIALIST GIN BAR — BUKIT BINTANG

Founded by CK Kho, the visionary behind Coley, Pahit occupies a beautifully preserved 1920s Malay shophouse on a quiet backstreet of Bukit Bintang. Its name refers to the colonial drink of gin and bitters that Somerset Maugham immortalised in his travelogues of old Malaya. The setting does justice to the reference: original tiled floors, lime-washed walls, an exposed brick back bar, and a slender courtyard with rattan chairs that invites long, unhurried evenings.
Pahit’s gin collection runs to over 150 labels — from rare Spanish and Italian artisanal bottles to benchmark London Dry expressions, showcased in an impressive back bar. A selection of house-infused gins, including the remarkable lychee and ginger flower creation, demonstrates the bar’s commitment to local character. The Gin Pahit — London Dry gin, bitters, house falernum syrup, and lime — is the essential order: complex, bitter, and utterly transportive. One of KL’s purest specialist bar experiences.

Rakh
SUSTAINABLE EXPERIMENTAL COCKTAIL BAR — BUKIT DAMANSARA

Rakh occupies a unique position in KL’s bar landscape: a sustainability-minded experimental bar that pushes Southeast Asian flavours into genuinely unfamiliar territory. Located on the first floor of The Five at KPD in Bukit Damansara, the bar is helmed by award-winning bartender Akshar Chalwadi, whose creative approach is rooted in zero-waste thinking. Kitchen scraps from a sister restaurant are fermented, distilled, and reimagined into components that power an ever-evolving cocktail menu.
Cocktails at Rakh are built on uncommon ingredients — Southeast Asian spices, fermented fruit byproducts, house-made vinegars, challenging the conventional boundaries of what a cocktail should taste like. The bar’s seasonal menus carry narratives of genuine gravitas: a recent menu paid tribute to Malaysia’s migrant workers, with cocktails conceived around the cultures and flavours of Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia. For the curious, adventurous drinker, Rakh is one of the most rewarding bars in the city.

Frank’s Bar
FRANK SINATRA INSPIRED SPEAKEASY — GOLDEN TRIANGLE

Tucked inside the Avenue K complex on Jalan Ampang — directly opposite the Petronas Twin Towers — Frank’s Bar is one of KL’s most fully realised concept bars: a New York speakeasy of the Prohibition era, built around the music, aesthetic, and spirit of Frank Sinatra. Find the fedora hat, ring the bell, and step into a world of leather sofas, blue walls, warm lighting, and the Chairman of the Board’s voice weaving through the room from open to close. The transition from a mall corridor to a swing-era supper club vibe is impressively well-executed
The cocktail programme, conceived by Roman-born bar manager Giovanni Andrea Magliaro, sits perfectly with the plush decor. Signature drinks follow a sequence of intensifying flavour and mood — a musical journey as much as a drinks list. The standout is the Drowned in Sound: a Boulevardier-style blend of bourbon, rye, Campari, vermouth, and chocolate and orange bitters, aged in a small oak cask fitted with headphones playing Sinatra at a precisely calibrated BPM range. The sonic ageing project is not a gimmick, blind tastings confirm the whiskey-enriched depth the technique delivers. Cocktails are uniformly priced at RM 45, a well-considered policy that encourages ordering by curiosity rather than budget.
