Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai

July 24th, 2013

Successfully operating internationally since 1989, the Bavarian-concept Paulaner Brauhaus– restaurants and microbreweries- can be found in some of the world’s leading cities such as New York, Moscow, Munich, Singapore, Cape Town, Beijing, and since 1997- Shanghai. The Paulaner Brahaus concept captures the essence of Bavarian lifestyle and hospitality- famous for their large scale beer halls and exuberant social dining atmosphere. Authentic Bavarian cuisine is cooked under the direction of a German Executive Chef- perfectly complimenting the freshly brewed natural Paulaner beers.  Combining a Bavarian-themed restaurant with an on-site microbrewery- in partnership with the historic Paulaner beer brand- has proven popular in Shanghai, with the original flagship restaurant in Fen Yang Road now joined by sister Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai restaurants in Xiantandi, Expo and  Binjinag Park in Pudong.

As the flagship Shanghai outlet, the Paulaner Brauhaus @ Fen Yang Road occupies an impressive building in the prestigious French Concession area of central Shanghai. Set well back from the tree-lined road on a large garden site, the original building was completely renovated under the direction of Bavarian design firm to re-create an authentic style Bavarian “brauhaus” style restaurant. A signature design element of all Paulaner Brauhaus’ are the gleaming large cooper kettles that stand behind the copper-covered bar counter and beer fonts. And referencing the traditional Bavarian dining style- seating is mostly at large solid timber tables and bench seats.

Paulaner is one of the oldest breweries located in the Bavarian region of Germany, dating back to 1634 when a local order of friars in Munich were granted a license to sell their brews to the public. Paulaner beer continues to this day to be brewed at the main Paulaner Brewery in the heart of Munich. The Paulaner beers are brewed in the micro-brewery of Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai under the supervision of a German Brewmaster appointed by the Paulaner Brewery, following the same brewing processes as in the parent brewery, and complying with the strict stipulations of the German Purity Law of 1516. Brewed from just four natural ingredients- malt, hops, yeast and water, the Paulaner beers are served fresh and unfiltered directly through the bar taps. Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai continuously brew three types of beer- Lager, Dark and Wheat. Special beers offered twice to three times a year on a seasonal basis are also brewed on the premises.

Bavarian cuisine is renowned for its wholesome, hearty nature- with robust flavours and generous portions. Among the notable dishes are the Grilled Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut; Home-Made Sausage Specialties such as White, Vienna and Regensburger; Schnitzel “Wiener Art”– Breaded Pork Escalope “Vienna Style” with French Fries or Potato Salad; and sharing platters of Mixed Sausages, and Cold Cuts & Cheeses. In addition to the authentic Bavarian cuisine, a selection of International dishes are offered- with choices of seafood, pasta, and grilled steaks.

Popular with both expats and local Shanghai residents, Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai is also a “family-friendly” restaurant and weekends are always packed with crowds of families- particularly in the warmer months when the outdoor beer garden is open. The  “All You Can Eat” Sunday brunch buffet featuring Bavarian and international specialties, seafood and kids’ stations is a majpr attraction year-round. And the nightly live entertainment performed by the resident Filipino band- with a wide repertoire of popular songs- adds an upbeat atmosphere to the evening dining experience.

Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai @ Fen Yang Road is open daily, serving lunch and dinner menus, and drinks late into the night. With such an expansive capacity, across several levels, Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai also lends itself as a flexible venue for private functions and corporate events- comfortably handling up to 500 guests.
