Newly opened in Shanghai – fresh organic grocery store combined with casual deli and tapas-style restaurant
October 16th, 2012
Tapping into the growing concerns about the integrity of the local food supply, and also the trend for more “healthy” eating, Green & Space has recently opened (August 2012) in Shanghai’s former French Concession district, offering local residents an enticing combination of both fresh organic produce, and casual eatery options. Occupying a prominent two story building near the corner of Hengshan Lu and Dongping Lu, Green & Safe is at the nexus of the popular upmarket dining and residential neighborhood. The modern, industrial-loft style space combines an organic Grocery section, with both a casual deli-style cafe on the ground floor, and on the upper level, an evenings-only space for dining and socialising, the restaurant and lounge named Small Plates.
Green & Safe is the concept of a Taiwanese group that currently operate organic hot pot restaurants ( Qi Min) in Shanghai, and have their own organic farms where much of the produce sold in the grocery, and used in the Green & Safe kitchens, is grown. Other organic produce such as meats, dairy, etc are sourced both from nearby organic farms, and imported suppliers.
The Grocery and Deli at Green & Safe are open daily from 8 am until 10 pm, and the Small Plates Restaurant opens nightly at 6:30 pm and closes at 12 am/midnight.
The entrance to Green & Safe- with street-front organic produce counter
Green & Safe occupies a two level building with a long street frontage – perforated metal sheets across the second level add an element of industrial chic.
The interior of Green & Safe is divided into three main spaces- on the ground level the grocery store and deli, and on the upper floor, the Small Plates Restaurant.
The spacious Deli features a long “L” shaped serving counter with the open kitchen behind. Concrete screed flooring, exposed steel girders and suspended aluminium lamps provide the space with an utilitarian aesthetic.
Casual canteen-style bench tables and chairs, with stools lining the bar counter facing out onto the street.
Clipboard menus feature the deli specialties- salads, pasta, sandwiches etc.
The Deli food display counter and salad bar- with the open-kitchen at the rear.
Selection of salads from the salad bar- (Clockwise from top L) Green salad; Beet salad; and Curry Grilled Chicken salad.
The street front serving table- with open crates behind showcasing various fresh organic products.
Inside the Grocery section of Green & Safe- with woven baskets displaying fresh organic seasonal and tropical fruits.
The Grocery section also features an extensive selection of imported wines- including some organic labels.
The Grocery selections include dairy products, cheeses, sauces, and fresh bakery and patisserie products.
Small Plates Restaurant
The Small Plates restaurant serves a combination of Western and Asian cuisines- mostly in the tapas-style of small plates for sharing. Daily specials are featured on blackboards above the serving counters in front of the open kitchen. Main course size dishes are also served- including selections of grilled fish, roasted meats, pasta and noodles. A full bar service of wines, spirits , cocktails and beers are served – together with non-alcoholic “healthy” drink options.
The main dining space of Small Plates features a series of blond timber high tables and grey upholstered stools, and similar tables settings.
The dining room has an industrial loft style with a vaulted timber ceiling and neutral palette of blond timbers, black and grey furnishings and white walls. The kitchen can be viewed behind the long service counter.
Stylish round table settings are arranged across the window frontage of the restaurant. The perforated patterns of the external metal screens provide an attractive filter to the outside views.
At the top of the staircase from the Grocery section, a discrete lounge area with soft sofa seating and low tables.
